Youth Ministry Christmas Ideas

Guys, I don’t mean to alarm you or anything.. but it’s literally 1 month until Christmas. Anyone else feel like the year speeds up exponentially once we hit October?

If you’re looking for some ideas for Christmas themed nights in the next month, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a round up of great ideas to pick from at short notice, from games and movies and decor to sharing the Gospel at Christmas. You can find some free goodies in our library too (available when you sign up here).

Decor:

Decor can go a long way in creating a fun and festive atmosphere! Your students may even like to help you decorate, and for some of them it may be the only Christmas decor they get to be part of. Here’s some ideas:

  • If you’ve got space for it, put up a Christmas tree (or two) in your Youth room.
  • Fairy lights are always a winner at Christmas!
  • Decorate windows with liquid chalk (inspiration here).
  • Use a hula hoop to make a Christmas wreath, and display it with a Christmas scripture inside.
  • Have a craft night and get your students to design and make a Nativity Scene to display in your church.

Games:

Christmas Carol Charades: Split into teams for a game of charades (or pictionary) and use song titles of Christmas Carols as the clues. Download our free printable list from the library or make your own.

Christmas Quiz: We love a good quiz night! Create a Christmas trivia quiz easily using PowerPoint.

You could also have a Christmas Sweater Night and vote for the best (worst) sweater!

Lessons:

Love movies? Here’s a lesson based on Elf.

Youth Ministry Collective has this lesson which focuses on hope in the context of Christmas, and this post on Advent.

Church Leaders has this free Christmas themed lesson and complete with activities.

This one is a lesson aimed at kids in Children’s Ministry which you could adapt to suit teenagers. It’s based on the Christmas story in Luke 2.

Songs:

Personally, I’m not a fan of Christmas songs about Santa. My reasoning is because Christmas is about Jesus, not Santa! So the songs included here will reflect that. These are some of my favourites:

And some less traditional options:

Christmas Movie Night:

Elf, Home Alone, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe seem to be hits each year! Pick a film and pair it with popcorn and some Christmassy snacks. Candy canes and chocolate-dipped pretzels or marshmellows make easy snacks, or search easy Christmas snacks on Pinterest to be inspired.

Alternatively, pair a hot chocolate night with your movie night. Step up the hot chocolate game with this recipe!

Other Ideas:

Bethlehemian Rhapsody – this video tells the nativity story with puppets to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody. Very cool!

Christmas Medly – Christmas Carol medly by Anthm Lights. So beautiful! They also have a Christmas Hyms Mashup here.

  • Definitely bookmarking this to see if anything will work in my ESL classes. I love songs about Santa, but I think you made the right choice because those songs aren’t appropriate for a Youth Group. They should be played when baking Christmas cookies. 🙂

    • Thanks Jasilyn! Yes, some songs are actually quite cool and I grew up with the Santa songs too. But it is my personal conviction, and I feel at Youth it’s particularly important to highlight Jesus is why we do Christmas 🙂

    • Thanks Lillian! It makes it easier to plan a great night when someone can help you out with even a little piece of it! Bless you and thanks for commenting.
